Pioneer Homestead

Explore our Pioneer Homestead with authentic cabins from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  You and your children will get a real feel for what life was like back then.  Peek into a one-room cabin and see how families lived, cooked, ate and slept.  You’ll appreciate being able to buy a loaf of bread, after you see all that went into grinding grain into flour at the water-wheel-powered gristmill.  Use the well to teach your children what life was like before running water!  And use the stocks to teach them about community discipline!  See how meat was preserved before the days of refrigeration at the smokehouse, and see all the tools that the blacksmith used and made.  Not only will you find out how grain was stored in the Corn Crib, but the self-guided tour of all the tools and equipment used for agriculture will show you and your children how hard folks worked back then!

Nature Walk

Take a leisurely nature walk along our 1500-foot boardwalk through our 12 acres of “the real Florida.”  Or walk it briskly 3 or 4 times for a great workout in the peaceful, shaded outdoors.  The sights and sounds of nature beckon you to a restful stroll.  It’s a great way to relieve stress—really!

Playground

Pretend you're a real Pioneer Homesteader in the covered Conestoga Wagon.  "Ride" the animals and enjoy hours of safe play in our enclosed sand playground.

The Necessities

Yes, even our bathrooms provide a unique experience!  Bathrooms off the outdoor yard will show you what it was like to use an outhouse—complete with peeking birds and critters, thanks to a local talented artist.  Inside, you’ll learn all about how bathroom necessities, like toilets and toilet paper, were invented.

Surprises

Local artists, engineers, builders, musicians and all-around ingenious big kids are always scheming and plotting new learning adventures at the Junior Museum of Bay County.  So stop by often to see what playful antics they’ve been up to!
